Drill Press Safety

1.   Adjust the drill press to the correct speed.  A drill bit turning too fast can break and send pieces flying at you.

2.   Be sure the tapered drill shank or chuck arbor is firmly seated in the drill press spindle.  A falling drill shank or chuck arbor may cause injury.

3.   Never leave the chuck key in the drill chuck.  If the power is turned on, the wrench will be thrown out at high speed and hit someone.

4.   When using a drill press, do not lean too close to your work.  The spindle and drill bit may catch your hair or clothing and pull you in.

5.   Never try to hold work in your hands while drilling.  The drill bit may catch, jerking the wood out of your hands and you may be struck by the flying pieces.

6.   Always clamp work you want to drill to the drill table or fasten in a drill press vise.  This will keep the drill from catching on your work.

7.   Never try to stop revolving material that is caught in the drill by using your hands.  This can break your hand and fingers.  Always shut the machine off and then remove the work that is caught.

8.   Ease up on the feed pressure as you break through the under side of material.  This will keep the drill bit from breaking or the work from being jerked out of the vise or clamp.

9.   When drilling or sanding, protect your eyes from dust and debris by wearing safety glasses.
